Students from the CJHS Band and Choir were a part of history this past Friday when they performed with other junior high and high school musicians in a concert festival on the SIUC Campus to celebrate the eclipse. The Concert titled, "Into the Darkness," brought together music students from Carterville JH, Carbondale HS, Unity Point, Giant City, Chester JH, Herrin JH and HS, and Du Quoin HS. Students rehearsed throughout the day, ending with a concert to a packed Shryock Auditorium that evening. Many of the participating directors took turns with ensembles, working on a selected piece of music and directing them in the performance. Some of the featured works were a world premier of a choral work, which was directed by Mrs. Zimmermann; an Illinois premiere of a band work by SIUC Clarinet Professor, Dr. Eric Mandat, directed by Mrs. Norrington, and the world premiere of the band work commissioned for this event and after which this event was named, Into the Darkness, which was directed by Unity Point director and Carterville resident, Luke Fleisher.
